The story behind the image

“I remember that freezing late afternoon in November. We accompanied these orcas for hours. There were more than twenty of them in this clan, including very young ones, born just a few days ago.

The light was fading rapidly, the sea was becoming dark. The group moved calmly, very close to one another, as if the day's fatigue was settling away. The cold was becoming intense, but the beauty of the moment made them forget everything else.

What I remember most is the atmosphere: a blend of gentleness, silence, and slowness. An intimate, almost familial moment in the heart of the fjord.

Stéphane Granzotto

Why is this image unique?

This photograph is unique because it shows the orcas in a rarely observed moment: complete relaxation after a full day of hunting, moving and coordinating within the clan.

The late afternoon light, typical of November in the Arctic, creates an almost dreamlike atmosphere—a colorful twilight, saturated with deep blue, where each ridge becomes a graphic silhouette. The very low light makes this type of image difficult to capture: you have to anticipate, compose quickly, and accept that the moment lasts only a few minutes.

The presence of very young orcas makes the scene even more precious: their appearance at the surface, protected within the group, speaks to the family structure and solidarity of the species. It is a scene of rest, cohesion, and warmth within an environment that remains cold, vast, and demanding.

“The End of the Day” encapsulates this duality: the harshness of Arctic nature and the tenderness of the social behavior of orcas.
