The story behind the image

"Once again, I relied on the sperm whale's curiosity and playful nature to create this image. A group had just surfaced in front of me — I was simply wearing fins, a mask and a snorkel.
A subadult then approached almost to touch, before beginning a descent right below me. As it sounded, it released a few bubbles, like a final signal before reaching the depths.
The sun's rays accentuated everything: the texture of the skin, the symmetry of the tail, and that sensation of gliding into a world of absolute silence. For me, it was a powerful, intimate, and rare moment.

Stéphane Granzotto

Why is this image unique?

This photograph is unique in the purity of its moment: the start of a dive, captured at the precise second when the sperm whale plunges into the depths.
The natural composition — raised tail, suspended bubbles, radial light — creates an almost iconic image, where the minimalism of the blue underlines all the power of the animal.
It also shows a typical behavior but rarely observed so closely: the "launching" of a young sperm whale, still playful, still curious, but already master of its universe.

Art print

The photographer's recommendation
