The story behind the image

“That day, the light was exceptional. It was late afternoon, in that very special moment of the Arctic winter when the sun only grazes the horizon. It's not really a sunset: it's a permanent, warm, almost unreal glow.

The group moved across the surface, and among them, this large male immediately captivated me. His dorsal fin stood out perfectly against the low light. With each breath, his exhalation transformed into an incandescent cloud.

I remember waiting for the precise moment when the light would hit the breath. When I pressed the shutter, the droplets ignited like particles of gold. It was very brief, a fraction of a second, but that's what makes those moments so precious.

For me, this image represents the ideal encounter between the power of the animal, the beauty of the light, and the magic of the fjord.

Stéphane Granzotto

Why is this image unique?

This image is unique because it captures a luminous phenomenon of rare intensity: the breath of an orca pierced by the low Arctic sun, creating a golden dust in the air that seems to float weightlessly. The scene lasted only an instant, barely a breath, but it brought together conditions almost impossible to anticipate: the wind direction, the precise angle of the sun, the animal's trajectory, and the moment it surfaced.

What makes this photograph so special is the encounter between the orca's quiet power and the almost unreal softness of the light. The vast, cold fjord fades into a bath of luminous warmth, transforming the landscape into a dreamlike setting. The sea, meanwhile, reflects the sun's rays like a mosaic of copper and fire.

In this fragile harmony, the orca moves forward, carried by a light unlike any other. It is a moment when the animal, the water, and the sky seem to breathe together, a brief instant when the Arctic reveals a warmer, almost tender side. It is this rarity—this alchemy of strength and delicacy—that makes this photograph truly exceptional.

The photographer's recommendation

With its golden light and warm energy, Orque Sunset works wonderfully in interiors where you want to bring life, warmth, and depth. It pairs very well with:
• to natural or “terracotta” atmospheres,
• with walls in cream, sand, light ochre, or warm browns,
• to bright spaces that enhance golden tones,
• to natural woods (oak, walnut, teak) and organic materials.

A matte black, dark walnut or natural oak frame is particularly recommended depending on the desired effect.

It's a warm and strong photograph, perfect for a living room, entryway or office where you want a sunny presence.
