The story behind the image

“I remember that day perfectly. The sky was very overcast, almost completely obscured, and the light seemed to glide across the water without ever really reaching it. We were heading back to the port after a difficult day: few animals visible, few opportunities to launch. I had almost mentally packed away the gear.”

And then, just before heading back, a small group of orcas appeared on the surface. The wind had created long, dark, and imposing waves. Among them, a large male broke away and began swimming in our direction.

I asked Lucas, our skipper, to help me position myself correctly. At that precise moment, a brief opening in the sky let through a cold, almost metallic light. It struck the animal's back, creating this improbable reflection, like moving mercury.

I only triggered it four or five times.
It was a brief, almost fleeting moment, but breathtakingly beautiful.

Stéphane Granzotto

Why is this image unique?

This image is unique because it captures a rare luminous phenomenon: a cold, harsh, and oblique light that literally transforms the orca's skin into liquid metal. This silvery sheen—combined with the deep blue of the fjord and the darkness of the setting—creates an atmosphere unlike any other.

The photograph condenses the raw power of the animal and the almost supernatural aesthetic of the moment. The sea becomes matter, the sky becomes a stage, and the orca rises like a living sculpture, shaped by the light.

Everything rests on a fragile balance: the wave forming at the right moment, the exact direction of the light, the orientation of the ridge, the distance from the boat. Nothing is predictable, nothing is reproducible.

It is a once-in-a-lifetime moment — an apparition in the blue, where the Arctic reveals a cold, sharp, almost mineral beauty.

The photographer's recommendation

Orque Mercure is a spectacular image for modern, elegant, and high-contrast interiors. With its deep blues and metallic sheen, it works particularly well in:
• contemporary spaces in cool tones (grey, slate, midnight blue),
• minimalist interiors where it becomes a centerpiece,
• Lounges or offices with high-quality materials: dark wood, black metal, stone, marble,
• nocturnal or dimly lit atmospheres where its reflections take on their full dimension.

A matte black or dark metal frame is ideal for enhancing its graphic character and visual impact.
