The story behind the image

"This photo is very special to me: it's the one I chose for the cover of my book ORCAS.

I remember that moment perfectly. The sun, very low on the horizon as in the middle of an Arctic winter, cast a warm, unreal light across the churning surface. Underwater, everything was darker, almost midnight blue, and I was trying to follow a small group of orcas swimming in shallow water.

Suddenly, one of them passed beneath the surface, perfectly aligned with the sun's rays. I saw the light shatter, then recombine into golden beams. I realized that something extraordinary was happening.

I triggered the shutter at the exact moment the beams formed a luminous path around the orca. A second later, everything had disappeared.
It was brief, fragile, but breathtakingly beautiful.

Stéphane Granzotto

Why is this image unique?

This photograph is unique because it reveals an extremely rare encounter between skylight and underwater life. The sun, plunging through the waves, creates an architecture of golden beams that exists for only a few moments each day — and only when the water, the wind, the angle, and the depth align perfectly.

The orca, positioned precisely within this column of light, appears almost to float outside its natural environment. The scene then becomes symbolic: a marine giant traversing a halo, as if the sun itself were illuminating its path.

Nothing in this image is calculable. Neither the animal's position, nor the shape of the surface, nor the intensity of the rays. It's an alchemy of chance, patience, and instinct.
That's what gives it that magical aura — a moment of pure grace beneath the surface.

The photographer's recommendation

Orque Sunset (underwater) works wonderfully in elegant, modern, or minimalist interiors. The depth of the blue and the golden light create a contrast that immediately catches the eye.

Photography blends in particularly well:
• with neutral tones, sand, linen or light grey,
• in bright spaces where natural sunlight enhances the colors of the image,
• in minimalist interiors where it brings a dreamlike and poetic touch,
• with a matte black, light wood, or brushed aluminum frame, depending on the desired atmosphere.

It is a centerpiece, soft yet powerful, ideal for a living room, bedroom or relaxation space where you want an invitation to travel.
