The story behind the image

"This photograph was taken off the coast of Mauritius, after several years spent diving with sperm whale clans in the Indian Ocean. Their social structure is based on solidarity, transmission, mutual aid and great family stability.

Here, a mother swims calmly by, her calf clinging to her side. In the world of sperm whales, young whales stay with their mothers for several years, where they are fed, protected, and taught the ways of life underwater. They are highly evolved animals, possessing culture, complex communication skills, and profound sensitivity.

This image expresses the balance and gentleness of their matriarchal society.

Stéphane Granzotto

Why is this image unique?

This image is unique because it captures a moment of absolute tenderness between a mother and her child, in a relationship where everything is gentleness, protection, and the passing on of knowledge. The composition reveals the serenity emanating from this duo, gliding side by side in the blue rays of the ocean.

She also points out that the world of sperm whales is based on exceptional social bonds, without conflict or aggression — a stable, peaceful society, where young people are surrounded, valued and protected.

The posture of the little one nestled against his mother, the light filtering from the surface, the depth of the blue that envelops them: all these elements give this scene a dimension that is at once intimate, pure and universal.

The photographer's recommendation

• Chalet moderne : bois chaud, laine, velours, ambiance feutrée.
