The story behind the image

"This image shows part of the group of sperm whales in the Indian Ocean that I followed for several years.
The adults had been fanning their breaths at the surface and, in a veritable chorus of clicks, they decided one after another to probe towards the depths.

But among them was this young sperm whale. Just a few weeks earlier, it hadn't been able to keep up with the adults on their long dives. Often, when the adults go hunting in the abyss, the young stay at the surface.

That's how I was able to spend long periods of time with them, watching them wait patiently, alone, for their families to return.

Stéphane Granzotto

Why is this image unique?

This photograph is unique because it shows a rare collective behavior: a complete group of sperm whales, adults and young subadults, just before the deep dive phase.
The concert of clicks is perceptible at the very moment of the shot: these sounds, true social and echolocation signals, announce the imminent departure towards the abyss.

Visually, the scene is remarkable: several massive silhouettes glide through a deep blue, the light outlines their shapes, and the movement of the group gives an impression of natural choreography.
The young sperm whale is not isolated: it is included, protected, integrated — a powerful testament to the cohesion and social sophistication of sperm whales.

The photographer's recommendation
