The story behind the image

"This image was taken off the coast of Mexico. That day—like the day before—I spotted dozens, then hundreds of blows at the surface. There was an impressive gathering of sperm whales, all in full activity: they were breathing, diving, hunting in the abyss. The ocean resonated with thousands of clicks, a veritable symphony."

Among all the busy adults, four young sperm whales stood out. Unlike the others, they seemed much more interested in me than in hunting. I slid gently into the water from the boat, and they immediately came towards me.

I love the posture they're adopting here: huddled together, as if to reassure themselves, while staring intently at me. Their curiosity was irresistible, but they remained united, close-knit, unable to separate.
They turned around to observe me, in that characteristic position where the sperm whale tilts its body to see better.

It was a suspended moment, poised between curiosity and caution, a tender encounter with the clan's future.

Stéphane Granzotto

Why is this image unique?

This photograph is unique because it reveals a rarely observed behavior: the very strong bond between young sperm whales as they explore their environment. At this age, they are playful, cautious, and extremely curious—and this image perfectly captures this combination.

Their almost choreographed posture creates a powerful and unexpected visual effect: four massive bodies embracing, supporting, and moving forward together. It's a deeply moving scene that testifies to the remarkable social intelligence of sperm whales.

This image also shows how these young people spontaneously interact with humans when the approach is gentle and respectful: they come, observe, stay together, but do not run away.

It represents one of the moments when we strongly feel the sensitivity, emotion and family cohesion of these animals, among the most evolved on the planet.

The photographer's recommendation
