The story behind the image

"This photo truly symbolizes the fjord at this time of year. It is nothing but cold, ice, snow, and wind."

That day, the conditions were difficult. We followed a group of orcas, peacefully and quietly, and I photographed them for long minutes, watching them move about in this breathtaking setting.

The graphic, almost monochrome quality of these animals against the vertiginous cliffs of the Norwegian coast is something I love. For me, this image perfectly symbolizes the presence of orcas in this region, their quiet strength, and the austere beauty of their environment.

Why is this image unique?

This image is unique because it captures Arctic Norway in its purest form: a colossal mountain, entirely frozen in snow, facing a sea of steel where a few orcas swim. It's all about the balance between the monumentality of the landscape and the delicate silhouettes of the animals.

The extremely soft winter light creates an almost monochrome atmosphere, rare and difficult to photograph without losing the subtle details of the scene. Here, it is mastered: the mountain patterns, the nuances of the fjord, and the perfect line of the fin are perfectly legible.

The alignment of the group, the reading of the landscape, the tranquility of the sea, all contribute to an image that seems almost unreal. It is a suspended moment, where one feels both the harshness of the climate and the serenity of the orcas that live there.
