The story behind the image

"It's part of a clan of orcas passing near me. On the surface, at that moment, there is a snowstorm: the conditions are not easy at all.

We did manage to spot a group. I tried to get into the water, and a few animals broke away, coming towards me. They passed very close, very calmly, an impressive moment because of the proximity but also the great gentleness in their behavior.

I notice a young orca against its mother's belly: this is the beauty of these social clans where the importance of the young is paramount.

I love the hues of this water, so typical of the fjord at this time of year: almost metallic colors, with a magnificent contrast between these cool tones and the perfect black and white of the orcas. I really love this image and this moment of diving.

Stéphane Granzotto

Why is this image unique?

This photograph is unique because it reveals a rare and profoundly intimate underwater scene. Orcas are social animals, but observing them so closely, in complete harmony, requires an exceptional alignment of weather conditions, animal behavior, and perfect timing.

Beneath the surface, the world becomes calmer, almost hushed, contrasting with the snowstorm raging just a few meters above. It is this duality—chaos on the surface, serenity in the depths—that makes the image so unique.

The presence of a young one snuggled against its mother adds yet another strong emotional dimension: it reveals the family structure of the species, the attention and protection they give to their young.

Finally, the metallic colors of the Arctic fjord lend the scene an almost painterly atmosphere. The perfectly sharp black and white of the orcas contrasts with the density of the water, creating a composition that is both graphic and elegant. It is a suspended, majestic moment, and one that is extremely rare to capture.

Art print

Printed on Canson Infinity paper, each artwork is crafted with professional care, certified, and signed by the artist. Prints are available in various sizes, framed or unframed. Each piece captures the richness of golden hues and the depth of the Arctic sea.

The photographer's recommendation

The underwater clan naturally finds its place in clean, modern, and calming interiors. The depth of the blue and the graphic purity of the orcas create an elegant contrast with understated palettes—such as soft grays, mineral beiges, or neutral tones.

This image works particularly well:
• in minimalist settings where the lines are simple and the colors muted,
• with contemporary furniture in matte materials (black metal, ceramic, dark stone),
• in rooms where a calm, balanced, and contemplative atmosphere is desired,
• with a thin frame, light or black, which leaves plenty of room for the depth of the water.

Thanks to its cool tones and fluid composition, the photograph fits equally well in a living room, an office, or a reading nook. It brings an immediate sense of space, breathing room, and serenity—like an opening onto the underwater world.
