The story behind the image

"Once again, I remember that moment very well."
That day was probably the craziest I've had over all those winters in Norway. I think it was the day I saw the most orcas—maybe close to 200. An incredible day, but with pretty strong winds, which meant I didn't get to dive much.

At the very end of the day, as the sun was about to disappear, the orcas accelerated. They headed towards a specific spot in the fjord, probably because they could hear, several kilometers away, the sounds of other groups that had found herring.

The group we were following suddenly started swimming at full speed on the surface to reach the hunting site. And there was this female that I photographed, truly magnificent, with that edge of light framing her silhouette, and that spray of water thrown up by her speed.

All the power and elegance of these animals is there, in that precise moment.

Stéphane Granzotto

Why is this image unique?

This image is unique because it captures a moment of pure speed—a moment that the human eye perceives for only a fraction of a second. The orca, hurtling at full speed, bursts forth like a dark arrow in a fjord illuminated by the last polar sun.

The golden, ultra-low-angle light creates a luminous outline on the animal, accentuating the sensation of speed and giving the scene an almost unreal dimension. It's a light typical of Arctic winters, but difficult to capture at the precise moment the animal emerges.

The spray of water, frozen in the icy air, conveys the violence of the thrust and the muscular power of the orca. The contrast between the metallic blue of the fjord and the warmth of the light makes the scene both raw and poetic.

This blend of strength, precision, and grace in motion makes "The Rocket" a rare image, a precious testament to the group dynamics and incredible speed of orcas when they go hunting.

The photographer's recommendation

The rocket fits particularly well into elegant and warm interiors dominated by wood, cream tones, and natural materials. The force of the movement and the splashes of water create a very dynamic visual contrast within a refined and classic decor.

The image works just as well:
• in offices or workspaces where a strong and inspiring piece is desired,
• in interiors with warm colors (solid wood, beige, cream, caramel),
• in classic, contemporary or “executive” settings with moldings, soft lighting and elegant furniture,
• with a matte black frame, which highlights the strength of the silhouette and the water splashes.

With its golden light and vibrant energy, this photograph brings a powerful yet elegant dimension, ideal for a workspace, library, entryway, or sophisticated living room.
