The story behind the image

"This is an underwater photo of a phenomenon I try to photograph every year: orcas hunting schools of herring. Their strategy is fascinating. The orcas herd the herring into a compact ball by pushing them from the bottom, then tightening the group before striking them to stun and eat them. It's a coordinated, fast, and magnificent hunt to watch."

In this image, I was lucky enough to be in exactly the right place at the moment the school was rising very quickly to the surface, driven by fear and the orcas' efforts. When herring rise like this, they "outgas": each fish releases bubbles, creating the extraordinary halo you see in the photo.

In the background, a female orca can be seen pushing the ball to maintain its shape. At that moment, everything was sound: the movement of the pod, the bursting of the bubbles, the sounds of the orcas working around it. I pressed the shutter when the halo was at its densest, in this sort of visual explosion.

What I love about this photo is that it combines a wild, very naturalistic behavior with something eminently graphic. Many people tell me it looks like a painting, and for me that's a precious compliment. When such a raw scene becomes sculptural and powerful, it means nature has offered a rare moment.

Stéphane Granzotto

Why is this image unique?

This photograph is unique because it captures a moment where the collective behavior of the herring and the strategy of the orcas create an almost surreal visual spectacle. The massive release of bubbles forms a luminous cloud, like a translucent veil surrounding the ball of herring.

The composition pays homage to this natural choreography: the orca emerges in a swirl of silver, the compact ball unfolds like a living wall, and the filtered light of the fjord gives the whole scene an almost painterly quality. It is a wild, chaotic scene, but one of striking aesthetic beauty.

The rarity lies in this perfect convergence: the depth, the light, the position of the photographer, the precise moment when the ball rises, and the orca that arrives from the left to strike.
None of these elements can be anticipated.
It's an image that only happens once — a fragment of a hunt, frozen in the heart of the fjord.

Art print

Printed on Canson Infinity paper, each artwork is crafted with professional care, certified, and signed by the artist. Prints are available in various sizes, framed or unframed. Each piece captures the richness of golden hues and the depth of the Arctic sea.

The photographer's recommendation

With its energy, cool colors, and strong graphic structure, this photograph works ideally in:
• contemporary or industrial interiors (concrete, black metal, raw stone),
• Simple rooms where photography becomes a centerpiece,
• modern lounges, offices or creative spaces,
• environments where a strong, immersive and spectacular work is sought.

A matte black, dark metal or dark wood frame particularly enhances the depth of the blue and the brilliance of the halo.
