The story behind the image

“For me, this photo expresses all the beauty of the Arctic and the world of orcas. The landscape is rugged, mineral, almost monochrome in the very low light of the polar winter. You could mistake it for a black and white image, so much do the snow, rock and mist create a cold and harsh palette.”

And in the middle of this immensity, a pod of orcas emerges: a large male, some females, and a calf—a detail I love so much. Barely visible, but definitely there, swimming alongside the group, protected by the adults.
This scene depicts the social life of these animals, the strength of the collective, and the unbreakable family bond.

In this magnificent region of Norway, this clan gliding through the blue silence of the fjord is the very essence of what I come here to find: the power of nature, the beauty of the wild, the intimacy of the group.

Stéphane Granzotto

Why is this image unique?

This photograph is unique because it brings together extremely rare elements in a single scene. The fjord provides a monumental backdrop, an immense wall of ice that plunges abruptly into the sea, imposing an almost unreal scale. In this immensity, the orcas appear tiny, as if swallowed by the mountain. It is precisely this relationship of size—this tension between the infinitesimal and the gigantic—that gives the image its power.

In addition, there is the complete presence of a clan: a large male, females, and a youngster whose barely perceptible dorsal fin speaks volumes about the fragility of infancy. Capturing a group so clearly structured, in a calm and perfectly aligned formation, requires luck, patience, and an intimate knowledge of the terrain.

The polar light also contributes to the uniqueness of this photograph. It is a cold, almost metallic light that softens the contrasts while reinforcing the mineral character of the mountain. This atmosphere, impossible to recreate anywhere other than in winter in northern Norway, lends the image a silent, almost spiritual quality.

Finally, this photograph stands out for its perspective: a shot taken at water level, just centimeters from the surface, offering a rare immersion. The viewer is literally at the orca's eye level, as if sharing their trajectory, their slow rhythm, their cohesion. This proximity creates a feeling of intimacy that contrasts with the immensity of the setting, and it is probably this duality—the colossal and the delicate, the austere and the tender—that makes “Family” such a profoundly striking image.

The photographer's recommendation

This image is particularly well-suited:
• large rectangular formats above a sofa or low piece of furniture,
• in rooms with natural shades (taupe, string, hemp, sand, linen),
• combined with textured materials (bouclé wool, natural wood, raw ceramic),
• with a matte black frame, which enhances the graphic design of the scene and complements the silhouettes of the orcas.

This photograph adds visual depth and a sense of spaciousness: perfect for a living room, office, or any living area where you want to introduce both calm and power. The cool, mineral palette of the photograph creates a subtle contrast with a warmer environment, without ever overpowering it.
