The story behind the image

“That day, the sea was exceptionally calm, which is extremely rare in the fjords in winter. I remember perfectly that almost absolute silence. The orcas moved slowly, in family groups, and their breaths resonated more loudly than their movements. The light mist created by their breathing rose straight into the cold air before disappearing just as quickly.”

What made this moment so special was the water's perfectly smooth, almost varnished surface. It reflected the light from the sky and softened everything: the outlines, the colors, even the presence of the animals. The two orcas seen here swam in perfect synchronicity, without rushing, as if they too were enjoying the calm.

I was very low in the water, almost at the surface, which gives the impression of being in their wake, in their world. It's a very simple moment, but incredibly beautiful, where everything seems aligned: the sea, the mountains, the light… and these two orcas gliding in majestic silence.

Stéphane Granzotto

Why is this image unique?

This image is unique because it captures something extremely rare in the Arctic: absolute calm. In a region where conditions are often harsh, unstable, and unpredictable, a sea as smooth as glass is almost a miracle. This calm transforms everything: the surface becomes a mirror, the silhouettes of the orcas seem to float, and the scene takes on an almost meditative dimension.

The presence of two orcas, perfectly aligned, reinforces this harmony. Their synchronization, the finesse of their movements, the elegance of their black forms against the white backdrop of the mountains — everything converges towards a composition that exudes serenity.

It is a fragile, suspended moment, which nothing can guess or reproduce: a gift of light, weather and wildlife, brought together in a fraction of a second.

The photographer's recommendation

This photograph naturally finds its place in serene, bright, and refined interiors: bedrooms, minimalist living rooms, relaxation areas, or cozy offices. It works beautifully with neutral tones—beiges, off-whites, light woods—and brings a sense of calm and spaciousness.

A matte black frame, light natural wood or white aluminum particularly enhances the softness of the surface and the contrast with the snow-covered mountains.
It's an ideal room for creating a serene and contemplative atmosphere.
