The story behind the image

"It was one of the coldest days I've experienced in Norway. The wind cut my face, the sea was dark, and every drop of water splashed on the boat froze almost instantly. Despite these difficult conditions, two large males were swimming side by side, and I decided to get in the water for a few moments, even though the light was very low."

I remember this male in particular: immense, massive, with an incredible presence. On the surface, the light struggled to penetrate the clouds, but just enough to illuminate the contours of his fin and reveal the soft reflections on his back. When I pressed the shutter, he was moving calmly, seemingly unaffected by the cold and the wind.

This image, for me, symbolizes everything I love about the Arctic: the harshness, the fleeting light, the vastness of the landscape, and this very strong connection with the animals. You can feel all the power of this orca, but also its serenity. It's an encounter that profoundly affected me.

Stéphane Granzotto

Why is this image unique?

This photograph is unique because it brings together conditions that are almost never seen simultaneously: a large male at full surface, a rough winter sea, a visible breath in the icy air, and an unexpected ray of light piercing between the mountains.

The combination of the orca's power, the brutality of the weather, and the elegance of the light creates an image that is both wild and poetic. The contrast between the animal's deep black and the pristine white of the mountains further enhances this visual intensity.

It is a rare moment where nature, though hostile, offers a perfect balance between brute force and luminous beauty.

Art print

Printed on Canson Infinity paper, each artwork is crafted with professional care, certified, and signed by the artist. Prints are available in various sizes, framed or unframed. Each piece captures the richness of golden hues and the depth of the Arctic sea.

The photographer's recommendation

With its wintry hues, marked contrast and the very strong presence of the large male, this image integrates beautifully into sober, contemporary or industrial interiors.

It brings real depth to a living room, an office or a room where you want to create a powerful and contemplative atmosphere.
A matte black, dark wood or anthracite metal frame perfectly enhances this arctic scene.
