The story behind the image

"There, obviously, is no doubt about the identity of the photographed model: it is a male orca, a truly imposing animal in terms of its power, size, and beauty. He is sure of his strength, but without any aggression — absolutely nothing of the sort — just curiosity, a great deal of calm."

He lets me be in the water near him; he passes quite close. The conditions are not easy: in the Arctic, at this time of year, the light is very weak.

I chose black and white for this photo because I love the contrast between the animal and its surroundings, that low ambient light so characteristic of the fjords in winter. It truly captures the beauty of these animals and this demanding region of the world, which offers so much to the photographer.

Why is this image unique?

This photograph is unique because it reveals the presence of an adult male orca in a moment of absolute calm, a rare and precious closeness. The black and white enhances the scene by eliminating all distractions: only the lines, the mass, the breathing of the animal remain.

The water's surface, visible at the top of the frame, creates a delicate visual boundary between two worlds: the surface turmoil and the tranquility of the depths. The large male occupies the space with impressive elegance and confidence, devoid of aggression or tension—only a quiet power.
