The story behind the image

"It is difficult for me to find the words to describe this image as it represents something profoundly powerful for me. I shared this moment with my wife: we were both in the water when the whole clan decided to take a nap right in front of us.

Sperm whales have adopted this characteristic posture known as the candle: motionless, vertical, holding their breath, perfectly balanced at a depth of about ten meters.
They were fully aware of our presence, but it didn't bother them. On the contrary, I had the impression that they accepted us among them, as if we were part of the group.

I remember the feeling of moving through a veritable cathedral of life. I was able to dive underwater, glide between them, and circle around them. They didn't move. Sometimes, one of them would gently open an eye to look at me, then close its world again.

This is one of the most intense and moving moments of my diving life.
This photo is also one of the first to illustrate this vertical sleeping behavior so clearly and aesthetically. It received widespread media coverage and awards at numerous festivals.
For me, this image marked a turning point in my journey as a photographer.

Stéphane Granzotto

Why is this image unique?

This photograph is unique because it testifies to an absolutely exceptional degree of acceptance on the part of a sperm whale clan. Vertical napping is not rare in itself, but experiencing it in the heart of the group, just a few meters away, in total silence, is an almost surreal experience.

The scene exudes an incomparable serenity. The sperm whales, motionless in the perfect verticality of their sleep, form a kind of living architecture, like columns suspended in a deep blue. The atmosphere is silent, dense, almost sacred.
One feels peace, trust, an immense gentleness that contrasts with the power of these animals.

This moment also has an intimate dimension: the sperm whales show no anxiety, no sign of fleeing. They remain there, as if the human presence has been accepted, integrated into their rest. It is a form of acceptance that cannot be imposed—it is earned, through respect, patience, and a very gentle approach.

Finally, this photograph is unique because it played an important role in my journey. It won awards, was featured in numerous media outlets, and still represents one of the defining moments of my relationship with sperm whales.
It is an image that testifies to a rare privilege: to be welcomed into the deepest intimacy of a dormant clan.

The photographer's recommendation
